Overview
The Mathematics Coaching Program offers:
- Up to three (3) years of cost-free professional development and support for a school-hired coach.
- Two days per month of professional development held in Columbus for coaches from all over the state – September through May.
- One day per month of access to facilitated small-group meetings in coaches’ local area.
Expectations of coaches:
- Coach full-time providing classroom-embedded professional development.
- Co-teach daily in 3-4 classrooms for six weeks; then repeat with 3-4 new teachers.
- Participate in monthly professional development sessions provided by MCP.
- Build trusting relationships with participating teachers through confidentiality.
- Conduct data work to document progress in coach, teacher, and student learning.
Since the only cost to a school is in the hiring of a coach, below are several strategies that other districts have used to fund a mathematics coach.
- Some schools use Title funds to hire a mathematics coach.
- Others hire a long-term substitute or first-year teacher to replace a coach if hired from within the building/district. This would be a lower cost option for consideration.
- Some districts have hired a retired teacher to serve as the replacement for the teacher who becomes the coach.
- Some hire a mathematics coach from outside the building/district.
- Some schools reallocate Title I funds previously used for pull-out programs that research has shown not to be successful.
